Let’s talk about washing our produce. Do you wash your vegetables and fruit once you buy them? If so, do you wash it with a fruit/vegetable wash?
I’ve grown up with always making sure my veggies and fruit are washed, but it wasn’t until I really had kids where I decided to take an extra step to make sure they are really clean, and now with Covid and all these new virus appearing, I feel like it’s even more important now a day to take that extra step into washing what we are going to consume, especially when eating it raw.
Now, please don’t assume i’m a germaphobe because i’m far from it (well maybe not that far since this whole Covid thing happened) but you get the picture… but, I sure do hate when I get sick after something I ate and if I can make sure to remove any bacteria from the produce we are consuming, then I’m going to do just that.
Did you now that there is so much bacteria such as E. Coli and salmonella that can be on your produce or in it’s soil? There are also many other bacterias on the produce that doesn’t make us human sick as well. But, washing your produce and using a good + clean vegetable wash will reduce the chance of you getting sick. Cooking your produce with any type of heat will in fact get all the bacteria killed.
So, throughout the years, i’ve tried many different kinds of fruit/vegetable washes and absolutely hated them. Some that I used you can taste the awful wash taste, and some tasted like soap. It wasn’t until I discovered this one from Trader Joes.
Ever since trying it out… gosh I would say like 3-4 years ago, I’ve never used any other product since then. I absolutely love this one and it makes me confident in feeling and knowing that my produce are clean. Now, I know not everyone has a Trader Joe’s near them, and man do I wish they build one by you, because I seriously love shopping there, but I have found that Amazon does sell it there. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend buying it through there because they are honestly ripping you off and charging triple the price than what I paid for at the store (which is $3.99), but I have discovered one that many people like and recommend here as well and is much much cheaper than what Amazon is offering for the Trader Joe’s Wash.
If you do have a Trader Joe’s near you, get it! Every time I buy my produce, I always make sure that I take the time to wash it properly under running water and then clean it with the fruit/vegetable wash, just to make sure it’s clean.
When it comes to any fruits that I buy, I like to take a big bowl fill it with water and add some of the fruit/vegetable wash in the bowl. I then let my fruit soak into the water for about 10 mins. Once 10 mins is up I take my hands and rub the fruit in the soap like water, just to make sure the wax and bacteria is all off. After make sure you rinse your produce extremely well in clean water to make sure all the wash is off. Then pat dry with paper towels. You will then see the milky brown water from all the produce you soaked. So gross!
I’ve also noticed that when I do this, my produce seems to last longer than normal, which is always great!
Hopefully you give this a try and if there is a particular fruit/vegetable wash that you use + love let me know down in the comments below.
XO
