I recently had a facial at a medical spa a couple weeks ago and learned something new, and I of course wanted to share it with you all… just in case you had no idea, just like myself.
So, we all know that we should all wear SPF not just on our entire body, but on our face as well. Well I had NO IDEA that there should be a certain type of SPF that we should all be using until I had my facial.
So what she told me was that we should definitely be using SPF of at least 50 on our face, but more importantly is that the SPF that we are using is mineral based and not chemical based… WHAT!?
From what she was telling me was that when you use a chemical based SPF (like what I was using) it soaks into your pores and when the UV rays hit your skin it’s still affecting and the first 1-2 layers, but when you use a mineral based SPF it sits right on top of your face and will completely protect the layers of your skin. She lastly told me that the things you need to look at for a great mineral based SPF is for it to have zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
Of course when I got home I immediately checked my face SPF sunscreen (Neutrogena) to see if it was chemical based or mineral based… and of course it was a chemical based product. That day I ended up picking up from Target this CeraVe mineral based sunscreen. I did read all the reviews on this product and I will be honest… they weren’t so great. Many people complained about it leaving a white/purple cast on your face, and let me just tell you it does!
Now using a mineral based sunscreen, it is known for the white cast in most mineral based products, but technology is enhancing and there are a lot of products out there now that is eliminating the ‘white cast’. However, I really had no time to try out other products since we were going out riding with our ATVS the next day. So I thought I would give the CeraVe mineral based sunscreen a shot and base my opinion myself.
Well, as I mentioned… it definitely does leave a white case on your face and does give off a purplish affect on your skin. The thing that I didn’t really like is that I couldn’t just wear this sunscreen out without having to apply any makeup on because of the white cast it gives off. But, I will have to say that it did protect my skin. In fact, when we came home at night… I still had the white cast all over my face.

Unfortunately though, I have returned it because of the white cast issue. However, I did do more research and I decided to look at some reviews on YouTube and came across Liah Yoo’s channel where she reviewed the best mineral sunscreen of 2020 with no white cast. What I liked about this video is that she asked a few of her dark skinned toned friends to review and test out some of the products, to see if it leaves a white cast on their skin. She went over many different products, but what caught my eye was the Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen and is less than $14. She mentioned that it is a dupe to the Supergoop mineral based sunscreen which is almost $40!
And after reviewing and research the Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen and seeing that over 10 thousand people on Amazon tried and like it.. I ordered it!
What I like about this sunscreen is that it’s a 50+ SPF BB cream and it’s also tinted; which I ordered medium-tan for myself. If you’re not sure what BB cream is, it’s pretty much lighter than foundation but heavier than a moisturizer. BB creams will give you a light coverage with some type of skin care benefit… whether it’s sunscreen, antioxidants, or anti-aging.
When I tried this product out for the first time, I immediately. noticed that it is very light coverage.. it honestly doesn’t feel like you are wearing any type of makeup at all, and with that said it’s very light on the skin. It doesn’t give me a greasy feeling at all.. in fact it’s matte just like they advertise. I was a bit worried about the color because when I did apply some of the product onto my hand.. I noticed how dark it was, but it blended perfectly onto my skin.
Now, keep in mind when using this product, you don’t want to use a brush or beauty blender, just because it will soak up a lot of your product; which is suppose to be your skin protector. So I like to use my fingers when applying this product onto my face. And just like any other sunscreen, make sure to re-apply every 2 hours… especially when you know you’ll be in the sun!
If you are wanting a little bit more of a full coverage, I love using It Cosmetics CC cream; which has SPF 50+ and has mineral based sunscreen! This CC cream is definitely full coverage, but I love how it’s not cakey on the face! It’s such a great product that I’ve been using for years now and will continue to always use! It’s one of my ride or die ‘foundations’. And if you’re not quite sure what CC cream means, CC stands for color correcting. So if you deal with blemishes or uneven skin tone, using a CC cream will be your best friend!
Ok, I know I’m going on a tangent now about SPF, so the moral of the story is always make sure you are wearing a mineral based SPF! Not only will your skin thank you when you start to age, but it will also prevent skin cancer! So don’t forget to wear your sunscreen friends!
