OMG guys, I seriously cannot believe this wonderful but sometime pain in the ass husband and I have officially been together/dating for 15 years! 15 freaking years!!! WHAAAT! *MIND BLOWN*
So in honor of Bobby and I’s 15 year anniversary, I wanted to share our story of how it all started (its a funny and surprising one LOL) and how we got this far.
we were babies
How we met?
My aunt lived in an apartment near my high school (I was in 12th grade) which I would be over a lot. Not only have I always hung out at my Aunts house growing up, but I am extremely close with her daughter, Jessica (my cousin), which you’ve seen many times on my social medias and who was also my maid of honor.
So, as I would go over there a lot, I got to know some of the people that lived there, that would either be in the same grade as myself or 2 years younger. At this time, I still didn’t know Bobby, but about 2 years passed and I grew really strong friendships with the people there. We would always hang out, till late hours of the night.
One day, I was sitting at the tables near the basketball courts and that’s when I saw Bobby for the first time in my life. Now based on that last sentence you are probably thinking.. “it was love at first sight”…. NOPE (LOL). As he was waking to the courts, I just remember that he looked very intimidating; he had a du-rag on with braids and headphones in. I said “hi” to him and all I remember is he didn’t say “hi” back and he just walked right past me to his friends! RUDE… right?
Well, a few months later he returned. I didn’t really see him come to my Aunt’s apartment complex much, but apparently he was there a lot. So, all the people that I was talking and grew close with over the last 2 years; he was best friends with. *another mind blown*
And just to make things even more strange, we both went to the same high school together (however he was 2 years ahead of me), but we knew all the same people and hung out with the same people at lunch. But I’ve NEVER IN MY LIFE SEEN THIS MAN AT SCHOOL, NOR LUNCH TIME and he says the same about me. Never has he seen me at school either. Crazy right?
Ok, so back to the few months later when he returned back at the apartments, we were all hanging out near the courts (that was our spot) and he happened to be there. I honestly don’t remember if someone ever properly introduced us to each other, or even how we started talking, but we eventually became friends.
Over the summer, we got to know each other more, but I really got to know his best friend even more. More so that we started dating (LMAO.. I can only imagine the look on your guys face right now). Shocking right? We honestly weren’t dating long… truthfully for like a month. So anyways, he and his best friend decided to move into a town home together, which I obviously got to know Bobby even more, because I was over their home a lot. I was dealing with a lot of personal things at that time, so I was there quite often. And, of course with me being there a lot, I got to know Bobby even more.. and no not that type of “getting to know him”. I honestly respected his GF at the time. We never flirted, we were never inappropriate, we never did anything… and honestly, I was only ever at their house whenever my BF at that time was there. I am not that type of girl… well at least while dating (LOL)!
So, obviously things didn’t work out between his best friend and I, and just when him and I decided to separate; Bobby and his girlfriend ended up splitting too. Coincidence right or fate?
When the day came about of us somehow becoming single at the same time, we started to text a lot. Then he asked me out. Honestly, we didn’t really think anything was to come out of it… he just broke up with his ex of 3 years and I was just dating his friend. We honestly just thought it would be fun to date each other just to piss off ours exes… or as some would call it a fling.
Fast forward to 15 years later….
A fling.. turned into fate. We now have 2 wonderful girls together, we are married (going on 6 years now), we just bought our first home, and we have a wonderful son (Rocky our dog). Life is complete.
Who would of thought that dating each other with simply just wanting to piss off our exes (which boy did it work) would lead to kids and marriage!
And yes, for those wondering, his best friend and him are still friends to this day. It was definitely weird at first, especially when feelings started to appear, but we pushed those feelings aside and gave it a shot.
Now, as much as we always get compliments on how long we’ve been together and how many people look up to us, it’s not been an easy road. No relationship or marriage is ever easy, and I don’t expect them to be.
However, my number one advice to all is to communicate. Without communication there will be no relationship. No matter how small, no matter how big, no matter how much it might sting… it’s EXTREMELY important to do so!
My second advice to all, is to always date each other. Give yourself those important date nights. At times it may be hard, at times we feel like we might be losing hope, but sometimes that one on one date nights are what we need to bring those sparks back.
And lastly, my 3rd advice to all, is to always tell them you love them. Bobby and I never hang up the phone without saying “I love you”, we never leave the door without saying it, and we never go to bed without saying it either. Some may think we are crazy, but it’s one of our ways to know that we truly do love each other.
XO
